Tranesophageal Echocardiogram (TEE): Prep/Info Needed

Complete pre-certification if patient’s insurance requires. Patient should arrive 1½ hours prior to procedure time to allow for registration process. Patient must bring signed physician order and appropriate diagnosis for procedure ordered. Please bring drivers license, social security number and insurance card. Please bring a list of the medications that are currently taken.

Patient should wear comfortable clothing that allows access to the chest. Do not eat or drink anything for at least 4 hours before the test. Please take your medications as directed by your physician.

A transesophogeal echocardiogram (TEE) is done to visualize the heart muscle and the heart valves via the esophagus. You will be asked to change into a hospital gown upon arrival to the department. Once the doctor arrives, the technologist will spray a numbing medicine in your throat. You will also be given some medicine to help you relax through an IV. Once your throat is numb, you will be asked to swallow to help pass the tube. The procedure will take approximately 30 minutes to complete; however, you will remain in our recovery area for another 2 – 4 hours. You may eat after your gag reflex returns.

You must have someone drive you home. You will not be able to drive for 24 hours after the procedure.

Where the Patient Should Enter

The patient should park in the outpatient parking area at North Fulton Hospital. The patient should register with the outpatient admitting representative. After registering, the patient will be given directions to the department. Family members may accompany the patient to the procedure room or wait in the waiting room.
