The Importance of Talking to Your Doctor

Whether you are 25 or 65, it is important that you maintain open lines of communication with a health professional. This not only applies to women who think they may have risk factors for developing breast cancer; on the contrary, statistics have shown that most women that develop breast cancer demonstrate no significant risk factors other than the fact that they are of the female gender. When you visit your physician, it is helpful that you be open and honest. Do not be afraid to ask questions if you are confused or curious; after all…it is your health, your body, your life.

Here are some questions that you might want to consider asking your cancer care team:
        1.  What type of breast cancer do I have?
        2.  Has it spread?
        3.  What stage is my cancer?
        4.  Am I eligible for any clinical trials?
        5.  What treatments are recommended?
        6.  What side effects can I expect?
        7.  Is there anything I can do to prepare for treatment?
        8.  Will I still be able to have children?
        9.  What are the chances that my cancer might return?

These are only suggestions. Upon visiting your physician, you may find that other questions come to mind, so ask away! Remember: there are no stupid questions. When it comes to your health, everything is important.
