The Basics of Breast Health

Did you know that no two snowflakes are alike?

Well, the same is true for breasts. Every woman is unique and there is no such thing as a “typical breast.” Some women might say their breasts feel lumpy while others have very few natural lumps. It is also common for breasts to swell or become tender around a woman’s menstrual cycle and to change as women age. These various changes that occur over time in a woman’s breasts are a natural part of life and all the more reason to become familiar with your breasts through breast self exams. This familiarity helps you identify any unnatural changes.

While there is no such thing as a normal breast, every breast is made of the same 3 components:
        1. Glands that produce milk
        2. Ducts (passages) that carry milk to the nipple
        3. Connective tissue that holds everything together

Most breast cancers occur in the glands and ducts.
