Pre-Operative Department
The pre-operative area prepares all patients for surgery. A health history is obtained. Physician orders, anesthesia protocol and indicators from the health history determine the lab studies to be obtained. Vital signs including oxygen saturation and weight are determined. Teaching is reviewed with the patient and family about the time to arrive (generally one hour prior to start time), whether to eat or drink before the surgery and medications to take the day of surgery. Any special instructions are reviewed such as wearing compression hose, breathing exercises and the use of the pain scale.
